Spider Veins
What are Spider Veins?

Spider veins are like varicose veins but smaller.

They begin as tiny capillaries and appear as blue or red squiggles. They are small red, blue or purple veins that commonly appear on the surface of the thighs, calves and ankles.

It's estimated that at least one third of the adult female population is troubled with this common problem.

People often seek treatment for spider veins because of cosmetic concern. However, it is also common for spider veins to cause symptoms; such as:
  • aching
  • heaviness
  • itching and night cramps
Spider veins may be isolated or associated with “feeder” veins. They can also be associated with larger underlying varicose veins.

Spider Vein Treatment Options

Patients with spider veins can be treated in several different ways.

If they are isolated and are not connected to the deep surrounding veins, Spider Veins can be treated simply by injection (akin to the size of an acupuncutre needle) of a concentrated medication into the vein itself. This causes the vein to basically occlude and dry up - giving the appearance of completely disappearing.

Although most patients undergo several sessions of this to achieve complete results, this is one of the most rewarding and fulfilling treatments in venous disease as there are usually excellent outcomes.

Somewhat larger varicose veins, which are not associated with severe valvular incompetency and reflux, can also be treated in a similar manner by injection sclerotherapy.

As there have been cases reported, of the patients even having large ulcerations, tissue and skin loss, and even limb loss from inappropriate injections, so it is very important to note that these treatment procedure s should only be administered and performed under direction of a Medical Doctor (M.D.) who is specialty trained and board certified as a VASCULAR SURGEON!
